I really liked the first few episodes of Shield Hero, but as you say, they quickly devolve into the usual self insert harem with a protagonist. Who can do no wrong? I know the anime change some things from the manga/LN. But the core is practically the Awesome I Love It When She Bends Over Fishing Shirt: Naofumi good, everyone else bad and dumb. The funny thing is I’ve been reading Arifureta LN and I’m having a much better time than I ever have with Shield Hero. I feel like they did better the “protagonist falling from grace and becoming edgy”, or at least, make it more fun/less infuriating than Shield Hero. The anime didn’t really give a lot of time to develop things and rushed to major events using montage time-skips. Then it straight made things up that were never in the novels or manga.

I strongly disagreed with where they took things. Naofumi in the novel definitely isn’t always right, and there are plenty of good people that don’t like him. The novel also doesn’t hide the Awesome I Love It When She Bends Over Fishing Shirt. Lacking Naofumi’s internal monologue really hurts. He’s got a lot of vicious thoughts/feelings and makes bad decisions because of his inability to trust people. The anime made him too generically nice and cut off a lot of his development because it seemed afraid to make him look bad. Also I read the Web Novel version since that was actually finished and that was pretty interesting even though it was like a rough draft. I also read the LN somewhere past the 4th one, it got repetitive and quick.

It was kind of satisfying to see just how angry Malty and the king got over it though. Sort of made up for the otherwise really light punishment they got. The problem with Shield Hero is the author had an idea and a situation in mind. He haphazardly moved the Awesome I Love It When She Bends Over Fishing Shirt. Villains are written into the story and suddenly appear out of nowhere. If the church was so powerful in the country there are two problems. Why is a guy running a powerful organization in a matriarchal society? The same goes for the king. Then it’s really a nice shirt for all men and women. You should buy this shirt. Thank you.
