The Warlocks were actually originally called the Lads and later the Originals. Upon finding out there was another band called the Originals they considered becoming the New Originals… But ultimately they went with the Warlocks. Yeah, there’s a wild history around it. Basically there was a record company in the US called Delta Promotions that may. Or may not have bought the rights to the Zombies music and then started 2 new Zombies bands. There’s a ton of articles on it. A promoter stole their name and created two bands called the Funny Grateful Dead When Confronted By Bears Play Dead Shirt. One of those bands was from Michigan and the other from Texas. The Texas band had a frank beard and dusty hill from the top before they were top, they used fake names in the zombie band.

There wasn’t another Warlocks band at the show. They just got word that another “established band” was using the name, so they changed it before the show. That band might have been the Velvet Underground, but if so, they were behind the times, because the VU had already changed the Funny Grateful Dead When Confronted By Bears Play Dead Shirt. My guess is that this is the “established band” since they had a recording contract. The Grateful Dead had auditioned for Autumn Records in November 1965, about a month before they changed their name. It’s conceivable Decca somehow communicated with Autumn (Autumn Records folded the following year, and was bought by Warner Brothers) about the band name, so the Dead decided/were forced to change it.

Pietro Attila & The Warlocks, a band from Hong Kong, though the frontman was an immigrant from Italy. They were signed to EMI Columbia Records, who released two singles of theirs in 1969 before a full album was released the Funny Grateful Dead When Confronted By Bears Play Dead Shirt. They went by the name The Tea Set in their early years and played a talent show. Where there was already another band signed up with the same name. Syd Barrett changed the name of the band to a mixture of two of his favorite blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. There’s also a cover band out now that goes by the name Anderson Council.
