I actually just yesterday saw someone post a picture of the singular they in the wild…. on Facebook. “Soandso has updated their status” or whatever it is (I don’t have Facebook). It’s been in use for hundreds of years. But yes, singular they are nothing new in language. But they don’t fit everyone, so you can only really use them to refer to people. Who has specifically stated that they identify with those pronouns (ie, I don’t know your gender, so if I was referring to you I’d say they rather than xem)?.
