I’ve never thought about deaths in books being wasted because I’ve never thought that one should just write about the survivors – a new idea for me. It’s why as long as I enjoy the book overall, I’m going to be tense in any situation. Even if I know (in the real world) the character is going to live. I guess the best way to phrase it is – the character doesn’t. Know they are going to live, so neither do I. That’s a bit of a hyperbole – although pretty much all of my favorite stories are following a single character or cohesive group – and I’m not saying it’s a better way.
